By: Joe Dorsey, Director of Professional Audio Visual Technologies After several months, the coronavirus crisis is beginning to stabilize, and society is making strides toward reopening society.
But as we work toward this goal, it is clear that the next phase is less a return to business as usual, and more of a temporary “new normal”.
What exactly does “normal” look like after an event of this magnitude.
Some industries are bound to face more disruption than others, and schools in particular may be looking at a long road back.
The close-quarters nature of classrooms makes represents a potential risk factor, and authorities are planning accordingly.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis discussed a plan for a “hybrid environment” with “less interactions”, and potentially returning completely to remote learning in the event of future outbreaks.
Furthermore, according to USA Today, roughly 1 in 5 K-12 teachers say they are unlikely to return to school in the fall, and about 30% of parents say they are “very likely” to pursue at-home learning options.
Instructors and administrators have done a remarkable job of adjusting on the fly to the difficulties of the pandemic.
But with more challenges ahead, school districts would do well to consider adding to or upgrading their suite of distance learning solutions.
A Fully Integrated Remote Classroom Online videos, readings and worksheets can go a long way in a pinch, but as many schools concluded during the spring semester, students need face-time with instructors and a collaborative learning environment.
As such, video conferencing is the foundation of a top-of-the-line distance learning format.
Several video conferencing applications like Zoom made premium features free to educators during the initial wave of the pandemic, enabling them to improvise solutions.
In the long term, however, schools can empower teachers by leveraging those collaboration tools as a part of a full-fledged distance learning system.
Many schools are considering having instructors return to classrooms, while students remain remote.
In this scenario, educators could harness state-of-the-art AV over IP (AVoIP) technology and native integration with collaboration platforms to broadcast lectures in high definition.
The complexity of solutions varies, ranging from simple setups featuring a single camera, recording setup and broadcast tools, to much more robust options.
If an instructor needs live annotation, illustration tools, or cameras that dynamically pan, zoom and focus on subjects, a custom solution can be built.
Helpfully, these platforms can often integrate with third party Student Information Systems SIS and Learning Management Systems LMS.
This allows them to be seamlessly built into a holistic distance-learning program, from administering curriculum to tracking attendance and grading.
[h]Creative Solutions to Unique Challenges To limit interaction and potential exposure[/h]
as well as accommodate families who are not prepared to send their children back, some schools are considering a format in which some students attend in person while others stay remote.
How can instructors offer a consistent experience to all students under these conditions.
Traditionally, a “hybrid classroom” refers to a class format in which curriculum is divided between in-person sessions and independently driven distance learning.
But what about a format similar to a “hybrid meeting” in the business world, in which some students would attend in person, and some would be teleconferenced in.
In much the same way that integrators offer Conference Room as a Service bundles, .
[h]These AVoIP technologies can be applied in a classroom setting as well[/h]Schools can equip their classrooms with presentation-ready setups – controlled by a simple touch-screen interface – which integrate with collaboration platforms, allowing remote students to video conference into their class.
Remote students can view lectures, contribute to discussions, and even present projects using their own devices at home.
These technologies do not merely add value as a short-term remote access solution either; an integrated classroom AV bundle can revolutionize a classroom environment in the long term as well.
In an era of endless screens and short attention spans, these systems provide ease of use in helping instructors create a seamless multimedia experience perfectly suited to the learning styles of today’s students.
Better still, classroom bundles deliver this outcome for an affordable monthly fee; no hardware purchases or expensive upgrades required.
[h]A Partner for Re-Entry and Beyond At this point[/h]
it goes without saying that we’re living through unprecedented times and dealing with unforeseen difficulties.
Times like these, more than ever, underscore the importance of choosing technology providers carefully.
A good partner has an understanding of your situational needs, the technical expertise to provide solutions, and a customer-first mindset.
[h]Talk to Tech Electronics today to discuss how we can help you navigate re-entry[/h]
and set your students up for success long-term.

[h]We recently caught up with Max Allstadt[/h]
entrepreneur and independent CNC contractor out of Brooklyn New York.
Max is an avid Rhinoceros modeler and has been using RhinoCAM Professional with his ShopSaber CNC router since 2017.
This project is part of the stage for the United Nations 2019 Climate Action Summit in New York.    The RhinoCAM Project Max’s portion of the United Nations 2019 Climate Action Summit in New York included the stage backdrop and banner.
[h]Below you can see the curved “waffle board” frame assembly loaded into Rhino 6.0[/h]
The components that we will be studying today are the curved radii sub framework at each of the two upper corners indicated in the images below.
What is interesting about these two sub frames is that they are 3-dimensionally curved in each X, Y and Z axes simultaneously.
[h]To achieve this cut Max used RhinoCAM’s Advanced 3 Axis Curve Machining strategy[/h]
The toolpath follows offset to the outer perimeter edge radius while being projected downward in Z onto the curved part surface.
Max also utilized RhinoCAM’s stock from selection feature that allowed him to model his own unique in-process stock model to minimize machining time!    On the left we see the “waffle frame” assembly displayed in Rhino 6.0 with the RhinoCAM milling plugin loaded.
The RhinoCAM Machining Browser is displayed on the far left.
On the far right we see the actual United Nations 2019 Climate Action Summit in process with the stage backdrop clearly shown. Very Cool.
The Machining Setup The machining setup for this project includes just 3 operations.
Two are 3-axis roughing and re-roughing toolpaths while the third is a 3-axes curve machining strategy.
On the right you see the Machining Job tree.
The setup “Carved Arcs” contains the 3 toolpath operations in question.
You will also see that the stock is defined as “Stock from Selection”.
See more information about the stock below.    The Part Geometry The geometry for this setup includes the part models, masking surfaces, stock models and stock definition.
Image (A) below shows part models.
You will notice the compound curvature by looking at the top outer edge of each part.
Each part consists of multiple layers of ¾” stock.
Notice that the parts contain hollow cores to reduce weight.
In image (B) you will see that a masking surface is displayed on the top of the part.
This surface masks the hollow cores providing an even surface for the toolpath to follow.
[h](A) The 3D part models are shown in Rhino 6.0[/h]
You can see the compound curvature of the top of each part.
(B) A masking surface is displayed on the top of each part to hide the hollow cores from being machined.
Stock from Selection To save machining time Max has modeled his stock to match the actual stock that the parts will be cut from.
In image © below you see the 3D stock models displayed.
With the stock models selected in Rhino, .
[h]You simply select “Stock from Selection” from the RhinoCAM Stock menu[/h]This assigns the selected geometry as the current stock definition.
After this is done, .
[h]You then hide the actual stock geometry by turning off that layer in Rhino[/h]In the image (D) you see that the stock definition matches the shape of the stock geometry.
Stock from Selection is a feature that is available starting with the Professional configuration of RhinoCAM.
It is used anytime you have an irregular stock definition.
For example, it can be used when the stock needs to match a casted blank.
It can also be used anytime you want to minimize machining to a specific shape.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you hide the actual stock geometry after defining the Stock from Selection.
[h]© The 3D stock geometry is displayed in Rhino[/h]
It matches the actual stock placed on the CNC machine.
(D) The “Stock from Selection” is displayed.
Make sure you hide the actual stock geometry.
3 Axis Curve Machining After using 3 Axis Horizontal Roughing and the Re-Roughing, the finishing operation in this setup is a 3 Axis Curve Machining strategy using a ¾” ball mill cutter.
Curve Machining is another advanced 3 Axis strategy available in the RhinoCAM Professional configuration.
In this operation the toolpath is offset from a drive curve and projected downward onto the underlying part surface.
A cutting band width of 3.5” and a stepover distance of 0.112” (15%) matches the part width.
The operation also uses straight cut connections between stepovers.
The images below illustrate the operation.
Note that the selected drive curves are at the top outer edges of the part.    (G) 3 Axis Curve Machining is used to finish the top contoured surfaces of each part.
(H) A drive curve and cut width determine a cut path that is projected downward into the top of the part.
[h]More Shop Pics from Max Allstadt Here are some additional shop pics from this project[/h]
[h]Max’s ShopSaber 3 Axis CNC router is shown top left[/h]
This is followed by in-process stock material and the final curved frames installed.
